I've been enjoying Leland Maschmeyer's blog which is dedicated to the concept of Transformation Design. I must admit, I'm not in love with the name 'Transformation Design' but I do believe that what Leland is trying to convey is extremely important. Here's a link to a post where he tries to define Transformation Design. The way I see it, the word Design is enough as it already carries the idea of transformation inherently...I mean, can there be design without transformation?
Hey Michael,
I'm glad to hear you're liking the blog. I hope I can continue to be interesting.
And you're absolutely right. All design is a transformation...in theory.
In practice, I'm not convinced all design creates positive transformations in people. Just look at the work of many "starchitects." They are more in love with the building than how it affects people using it.
But most importantly, for us, calling it "transformation design" was a signal - to us, and to our clients.
To us, it is a reminder of what we are here to do. It is our north star. If what we do does not create positive changes in people and companies, then we did not do our job.
To our clients, it tells them what they are getting. Clients expect graphic designers to give them graphics. Architects to give buildings. A fashion design to deliver fashion. An interface designer, an interface. From us, what a client is buying is a transformation.
